UCNS Welcomes New Board Members

7-2-2021 The United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) is pleased to announce the election of new members to the Board of Directors. Board nominations are made by the UCNS Parent and Subspecialty Sponsoring Organizations.

Parent Organization Representatives

Paul G. Fisher, MD, was elected to serve an additional one-year term as Chair of the Board of Directors. Dr. Fisher has served on the Board since 2017 as a representative of the Child Neurology Society and has served as UCNS Board Chair since 2019. He is a Professor of Child Neurology at Stanford Medical Center in Stanford, California, and has been UCNS certified in Neuro-oncology since 2008.

Amaal Starling, MD, MSc, was elected to serve a three-year term as a voting member representing the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Starling is an Associate Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale where she is also the Clinical Practice Chair for the Division of Headache in the Department of Neurology. She has been UCNS certified in Headache Medicine since 2014.

Margie A. Ream, MD, PhD, was elected to serve a three-year term as a voting member representing the Professors of Child Neurology. She is a Child Neurologist and Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University, Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. 

Salvador Cruz-Flores MD, MPH, was elected to serve a two-year term as a voting member representing the American Neurological Association. He is a Professor and Founding Chairman for the Department of Neurology at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. Dr. Cruz-Flores is also Chief of Neurology, Director of the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit, and Chief of Staff at the University Medical Center of El Paso. He has been UCNS certified in Neurocritical Care since 2007 and Neuroimaging since 2008.

New Subspecialty Sponsoring Organization Representatives

Amanda C. Peltier, MD, MS, represents the subspecialty of Autonomic Disorders as a non-voting member of the Board. She was nominated by the American Academy of Neurology’s Autonomic Disorders Section and the American Autonomic Society and will serve a two-year term. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, at Vanderbilt University. She has been UCNS certified in Autonomic Disorders since 2020.

Gustavo J. Rodriguez, MD, PhD, represents the subspecialty of Interventional Neurology as a non-voting member of the Board. He was nominated by the American Neurological Association and the International Society of Interventional Neurology and will serve a two-year term. He is a Professor and Vice-Chair at the Department of Neurology at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. He has been UCNS certified in Neurocritical Care since 2007 and Neuroimaging since 2008.

Re-Elected Subspecialty Sponsoring Organization Representatives

Joseph Masdeu, MD, PhD, represents the subspecialty of Neuroimaging as a voting member of the Board. He was re-nominated by the American Society of Neuroimaging and will serve a two-year term. He practices in the Department of Neurology at Houston Methodist Neurological Institute and he is a Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine. He has been UCNS certified in Neuroimaging since 2008 and Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry since 2018.  

The UCNS Board of Directors has nine voting members. The five parent organizations have permanent seats with one vote each. The four other seats are for representatives of UCNS member subspecialties with voting privileges rotating amongst the subspecialties. Meetings of the UCNS Board are also attended by a representative of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology who serves as a non-voting "liaison" in addition to the executive directors of the parent organizations who participate in an ex-officio capacity.
